WALNUT CREEK, Calif.—Valent U.S.A. Corporation announced today that it will launch newly EPA-registered RyzUp SmartGrassTM at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis., September 29–October 3. RyzUp SmartGrass is a Plant Growth Regulator formulation specifically designed for use in dairy, beef, equine, sheep and goat pasture and forage operations to increase growth in cool season grass species.

The start of winter through the beginning of spring is a crucial time for balancing pasture growth and providing quality forage for meat and milk production. Applying RyzUp SmartGrass under cool weather conditions supplements the plants’ need for gibberellins and stimulates growth during these periods of reduced pasture production.

“RyzUp SmartGrass offers a substantial benefit in managing production costs in both conventional and organic operations,” said Steve Slaveck, product manager for Valent plant growth regulators. "By starting earlier in the spring and extending grazing later in the fall, farmers can reduce the need for supplemental feed."

First developed for the Australian dairy market, the RyzUp SmartGrass technology has now been adopted by farmers in New Zealand and Chile where intensely managed pasture production is limited due to cool temperatures during winter months.

“Best results with RyzUp SmartGrass occur in the late fall through early spring when soil temperatures are between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit,” said Roger Kaiser, Ph.D., Valent BioSciences Corporation’s global product development manager for RyzUp SmartGrass. “Under these conditions we’ve seen outstanding results in dry matter production without any loss of pasture quality.”

Many producers using the product experienced a visual difference in pasture growth within seven days and accelerated growth for up to three to four weeks. University trials in the United States have shown substantial increases in dry matter production when RyzUp SmartGrass was applied either alone or as part of a fertilizer program.

“As both dairy and beef producers look for ways to make full use of their pastureland, we see RyzUp SmartGrass as a tool to sustainably increase their bottom line” Slaveck said.
