Valent Views Episode 7: Tim DeSilva Scouts Pistachios in Fresno County
Fresno County, Calif. – In the latest episode of Valent Views, Sustainable Solutions Specialist Tim DeSilva takes us into the pistachio orchards during one of the most critical times of the season—late nut-fill and the early stages of hull split.
Once pistachio hulls begin to split, the nuts are exposed and highly vulnerable to pests such as navel orangeworm (NOW). Keeping crop damage under 2% is the industry benchmark, making timely hull-split treatments essential to protecting yields and ensuring crop quality.
DeSilva also sheds light on the growing challenges with Gill’s mealybug, a pest that not only impacts nut quality but can also interfere with harvest and processing efficiency. Through careful scouting and well-timed applications, growers can stay ahead of these pressures—protecting both crop performance and equipment longevity.
“Real orchards face real challenges every day. Our goal is to deliver practical, sustainable solutions that help growers meet quality standards and maintain efficiency,” DeSilva explains.
Real Orchards. Real Challenges. Real Solutions.
