Navel orangeworm (NOW) poses a major challenge for almond and pistachio growers in Northern California. Capable of destroying 30–40% of a crop if unmanaged, this pest requires vigilant scouting and orchard management.

Kevin Campos, Sustainable Solutions Specialist at Valent U.S.A., recently visited local orchards to share in-field strategies for protecting crops:

• Check almonds for larvae: Crack almonds to look for larvae and white frass in the hulls.

• Winter sanitation: Remove mummy nuts to reduce overwintering sites.

• Timely scouting: With up to five generations per year, regular monitoring is essential, especially for organic growers.

“Proactive orchard practices and careful monitoring make all the difference in controlling navel orangeworm,” says Kevin.
