PEST ALERT: Leaffooted Bug
April/May is the time to scout and manage Leaffooted Bugs (LFB) that attack tree nuts and tree fruit in California. Valent’s Todd Burkdoll, Field Market Development Manager for the West, outlines several tips for managing this tough, orchard pest—particularly for almonds, pistachios, stone fruit, and more. Todd recommends managing Leaffooted Bugs with Belay® Insecticide because of its effectiveness and ability to impact both flying adults and nymphs. LFB overwinter in pomegranates, and field sanitation is critical to manage those pomegranates adjacent to orchards.
Pyrethroids like Danitol® 2.4 EC Spray Insecticide are also effective against LFB, but Todd recommends starting with Belay as it is less disruptive to predator insects.

Tips for Managing Leaffooted Bugs (LFB)
- April/May is the time to scout and apply insecticides like Belay® Insecticide from Valent U.S.A. Check out Belay’s 2(ee) supplemental label for California.
- Use the high labeled rate for these pests. Do not cut rates as this decreases the product’s effectiveness.
- Apply at night when adults are less active.
- Be mindful of application speeds—SLOW DOWN to help ensure good coverage.
- Utilize good IPM practices and rotate chemical classes.
- As always, orchard sanitation is critical to help prevent LFB overwintering—especially in adjacent pomegranate fields.
