WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (March 17, 2009)—Valent U.S.A. Corporation announced Dr. Gerald Holmes has joined the Valent team as a Product Development Manager. Holmes will be responsible for managing research and development efforts for Valent’s growing fungicide portfolio.

“Valent is committed to bringing new fungicide products to market that fill unmet needs for producers and provide value to their farming operations. In order for us to do that effectively we have to have the right internal talent,” said Kevin Perry, Valent research manager. “Gerald brings to Valent that talent combined with incredible respect among the plant pathology community and a work ethic that growers know is in their best interest. Gerald fills an unmet need within our research and development staff, and we know our fungicide development efforts will be in good hands for many years to come.”

Holmes joins Valent after a notable career with North Carolina State University (NCSU). During his tenure, Holmes was honored with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Specialist’s Outstanding Educator award and the North Carolina Vegetable Growers Association Educator of the Year award. In addition, Holmes was a member of the Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension, the highest award given to Extension Specialists at NCSU.

“I’m excited to be a part of a company with such a strong customer focus and excellent reputation for quality products,” Holmes said. “Plant diseases continue to evolve and today’s farmers need the best tools available to protect their crops. I look forward to using my experience in applied research, disease diagnosis and management to help Valent continue to develop products that give growers tools against yield robbing diseases. I’m also anxious to broaden my experience with more diseases on more crops across the country.”

Holmes obtained a PhD in plant pathology from the University of California, Riverside, then served as a plant pathology farm advisor for the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Service. At UCCE, he was responsible for assisting growers with diagnosis and management of diseases on more than 550,000 acres of vegetable and field crops. Most recently, Holmes managed NCSU’s applied research program on vegetable diseases with emphasis on cucurbits, sweet potatoes and post harvest diseases. A highly recognized member of the plant pathology community, Holmes currently serves as President of the International Downy Mildew Workgroup and immediate past President of the Plant Pathology Society of North Carolina. He also chaired the Cucurbitaceae 2006 International Conference.
