Set Your Crop Up For Success in 2025

Post-harvest weed control results in cleaner fields this fall, eases spring planting preparation and may proactively reduce overwintering pest and nematode populations by eliminating plant hosts.

Long-lasting preemergence herbicides, including Valor® EZ Herbicide and Fierce® EZ Herbicide, can prevent weeds from emerging, improving early season weed control next spring, especially important for those growers in an early planting production system.

“Fall burndown applications allow growers to effectively control small-seeded winter annuals when they are smaller and easier to control rather than after root systems are fully developed and are more likely to delay spring planting,” says Eric Ott, Valent U.S.A. field development specialist.

Whichever product is added to the tank, Ott recommends making postharvest herbicide applications when soil temperatures reach 50 degrees F and before soils freeze.

Valor EZ Herbicide

Fall applied Valor EZ provides long-lasting residual control of weeds such as marestail, henbit, dandelion and more, which are especially troublesome spring weeds.

“Because marestail is resistant to multiple herbicides, germinates almost year-round and produces more than 200,000 seeds per plant, it can quickly take over a field shortly after harvest and continue its dominance until preplant burndown applications are made,” Ott says. “A fall-applied herbicide with crop rotational flexibility can allow fields to stay weed free longer in the spring compared to a burndown alone.”

Similarly, a fall burndown program that includes residual activity is one of the most effective dandelion management programs.

Henbit, a problem weed and a strong host for soybean cyst nematode, can persist and spread in fields, slowing the drying and warming of soils come planting time.

Fierce EZ Herbicide

With two effective modes of action, a low use rate and up to eight weeks of residual activity against a broad-spectrum of weeds, Fierce EZ is another option for burndown programs. The herbicide’s liquid formulation is recognized for ease in tank mixing, too.

“A preemergence herbicide, Fierce EZ outlasts the germination period of tough, resistant small-seeded broadleaves and grasses, including Palmer amaranth, downy brome, kochia, ryegrass, and marestail,” Ott says.

Unpacking the Benefits

Long-lasting control of tough weeds is the primary advantage of including Fierce EZ or Valor EZ in a burndown tank mix, but the practice offers several other benefits, including the following:

•    More time for rainfall activation
•    Warmer and drier soils in spring
•    Spread out workloads
•    Prevents out-of-control, weedy fields
•    Removes host for overwintering pests
•    Prevents nutrient tie-up in weeds
•    Manages tough to control weeds, such as marestail (horseweed)
