Presidio® Fungicide EPA Registered in Vegetables and Grapes

Growers gain flexibility in the fight against downy mildew and Phytophthora with new breakthrough chemistry

February 8, 2008

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (February 8, 2008)–Valent U.S.A. Corporation has received federal registration from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for Presidio® Fungicide in leafy vegetables, cucurbits, fruiting vegetables and grapes.

Presidio is a breakthrough, targeted chemistry for vegetable and grape growers with crops threatened by downy mildews. In vegetables, Presidio also controls late blight (Phytophthora infestans), and root, crown and fruit rots caused by Phytophthora capsici.

Presidio's fast-acting chemistry has a novel mode of action and is in a new chemical class-giving growers a powerful tool to control tough diseases and ward off resistance issues. Presidio protects crops with preventative control and some curative reach back action to help protect quality and grower profits.

Unlike other fungicide products, Presidio has no known tank mix limitations with other fungicides or insecticides, allowing growers flexibility in their crop protection programs. Presidio can be shanked in soil, applied via sprinkler or used as a foliar treatment.

"Presidio is just an all-around great product for vegetable and grape growers," said John Pawlak, Valent product development manager. "Presidio combines preventative and some reach back protection with soil or foliar treatment options for overall application flexibility to meet growers' needs. The label calls for tank mixing with another fungicide, so Presidio will be a strong tool against resistance as well as protection against downy mildew and Phytophthora for many years."

A strong contender across the hardest-to-control diseases within a variety of crops, Presidio significantly outperformed current fungicides in university trials on downy mildew in leafy greens and vegetables.

"Trials with downy mildew showed Presidio to be the top choice for lettuce and leafy greens growers in the West, and in Eastern Grapes," said Rick Kraus, product manager. "The novel mode of action and low pre-harvest interval (PHI) allows growers to spray up to two days before harvest in vegetables and provides maximum protection and flexibility through the crucial harvesting period. The California Department of Pesticide Regulation has Presidio under concurrent review, so we hope to offer the product in all major vegetable and grape growing states except New York in 2008."
